Following a failed attempt to get an FIR registered on her gang-rape complaint, a woman reached the Aligarh senior superintendent of police’s office on Thursday with a startling piece of evidence – a severed ear.
As the senior officer was not present, she produced the mutilated piece of cartilage before superintendent of police (rural) Yashveer Singh and complained that the police had not taken any action in her case even after two days. Singh then ordered the filing of two FIRs – lodged by both the parties involved – in the case.
The woman told HT that she was sleeping with her children on Monday night, when four people from the neighbourhood entered their residence and raped her. When her husband – who was sleeping in a makeshift room outside the house – came to her rescue upon hearing the cries, they assaulted him too. In the melee that followed, the woman bit off a suspect’s ear.
The four later left, threatening the couple with dire consequences if they told anybody about the incident.

{{/usCountry}}The woman said she alerted the police, who dropped by only to collect information. When the couple visited the police station the next morning, the police completed several formalities – including sending the victim for a medical examination – but lodged no FIR.
Gonda police have now registered a case against three people, including one Ravi of Dhatauli village, for allegedly gang-raping the woman. Police said the severed ear belonged to him.
A second case of assault and criminal intimidation has been registered against the victim’s husband on the basis of a complaint filed by the four accused. “I have ordered the Gonda police to investigate the matter,” said senior superintendent of police (Aligarh) Rajesh Pandey.
Assaulted for resisting rape
In another incident, a man allegedly thrashed a woman hailing from Iglas village when she resisted his sexual advances. When the local police failed to act on her complaint, she visited the senior superintendent of police’s office – where she fainted.
According to sources, the woman passed out in front of the superintendent of police’s office before she could submit her written complaint. Though no police personnel initially came to her assistance, a woman constable helped her to a chair after media photographers began clicking away. She was later taken to a hospital.
The woman told HT that the person in question had allegedly murdered her husband four years ago. Though she eventually struck a compromise with the accused, he forced his way into her house on Tuesday night and tried to rape her. When she raised the alarm, he brutally assaulted her and fled the scene before the neighbours could arrive.
The next morning, relatives of the accused dropped by and threatened her with dire consequences if the police were alerted to the incident.
“We have completed the medical examination of the victim. The local police have been instructed to conduct an investigation and take suitable action,” said Singh.
