An Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) jawan died after his parachute failed to open during a practice jump from a chopper at the Sarsawa air force station, in Saharanpur on Monday night.
According to police, Karma Shring Somsok, a resident of Leh (Ladakh) had come to Sarsawa for training. “During training at around 9.30 pm, Somsok took a jump from a helicopter but his parachute did not open and he fell on the bank of the Yamuna river. He was rushed to a hospital but was declared brought dead by the doctors there,” police said.
More than a dozen defence forces personnel were involved in the drill when the accident took place.
Superintendent of police (rural) Jagdish Sharma said after police were informed about Somsok’s death, they got a post mortem conducted on his body and then handed it over to Indo-Tibetan Border Police officials. The body was later sent to Karma Shring Somsok native place, Leh.
