Whacky and colourful, with an equal measure of bizarre thrown in — we see a new food trend pop up almost every other day. Thank to the wonderful world of food, we’ve lived through a lot of interesting new creations this year (and we’re not even halfway through 2017, yet).
From charcoal and unicorn obsession to ice-cream doughnuts and jelly cakes — here are some of our favourites.
UNICORN EVERYTHING
Unicorn frappuccino, unicorn bagels, unicorn grilled cheese...the list is endless. The internet is so obsessed with this new trend that there is something multicoloured coming up, every now and then. Master chefs like Gordon Ramsay have gone out and dissed the fad, but the internet still seems to be loving it.
CHARCOAL LOVIN’
If you thought that only multicoloured fantastical food offerings are good enough for gramming, you might want to rethink. Black-hued deliciousness is an Instagram favourite too, thanks to charcoal-based food and drinks. The black hue is thanks to activated charcoal — a by-product of burning coconut shells, wood, or other plant materials. These foods are safe to eat, mesmerising, and are sweeping the internet, one post at a time.

COFFEE CONES
Search for #CoffeeInACone and you’d come across the world’s most instagrammable coffee (yes, that is what they are calling it). Replacing ice-cream with coffee in waffle cones, this is social media’s hottest new love interest. Lined with chocolate to avoid leaks, this trend is for coffee lovers who can just pick it up on the go and enjoy their favourite beverage, with a hint of childhood nostalgia intact.
JELLY CAKES
This trend is not just delicious and good looking, but a crafted creation that is food art at its apex. Made using Agar Agar (a jelly like substance obtained from algae), these cakes don’t have decorations on top and are transparent. 3D flowers like dahlias, roses and daisies are created by injecting a combination of food grade colours and gelatin.
CLOUD EGGS
Easy to whip up (yep, it doesn’t require you to be a chef), super light and very grammable — cloud eggs are a brunch favourite. What makes these even better is that you can pair them up with a fancy avocado toast or assorted veggies, and you will have more likes pouring in on your post.
OBSESSED WITH DOUGHNUTS
Doughnuts, on their own, make for great Instagram posts. But, the insta-world loves to amp up the fun from time to time. That is where a variety of bizzare and delicious doughnut offerings come in. We’ve filled them with ice-cream, made them out of spaghetti, and have even managed to turn sushiint their look-alikes. Also, Cronuts (A croissants and doughnut hybrid) is big on Instagram too.
MERMAID TOASTS:
Turning the mundane breakfast into a work of art, the trend of mermaid toasts begins where the unicorn trend finishes. Started by Adeline Waugh, the food trend is nothing short of magical, and is an attempt to excite people whilst keeping them away from bad calories. Healthy ingredients, natural colours and fruit/veggie toppings are what make these toasts beautiful and oh-so-delish!
ROSE LATTES
Touted as the saviour from all things unicorn, the rose latte is on a rise — not just because it looks great, but also because it tastes equally good. Made using rose syrup, organic beetroot juice, milk and dried rose petals, this latte has become a favourite..
