26/11 martyr’s wife loses valuables worth ₹1.16 lakh to thak-thak gang

An FIR was registered against an unidentified person under section 420 (cheating) of IPC. Officers of the Worli police said they have zeroed in on the suspect and will catch him soon.

Vinita Kamte, wife of 26/11 martyr additional commissioner of police Ashok Kamte, has become the latest victim of the ‘thak-thak’ gang. Kamte, 53, recently filed a complaint at the Worli police station, after her bag, containing valuables worth ₹1.16 lakh, was allegedly stolen by the gang. Although it was recovered later, the cash and earrings were stolen.

An FIR was registered against an unidentified person under section 420 (cheating) of IPC. Officers of the Worli police said they have zeroed in on the suspect and will catch him soon. Sukhlal Varpe, senior inspector, said, “We have the CCTV footage. We will nab him soon.”

The incident occurred last month, when Kamte, her friend Mariat Arana, 56, and Arana’s husband Francis, 60, had gone out in Kamte’s car. They had parked the car outside an ATM kiosk at Worli Naka, and Kamte and Francis had got down. Kamte’s bag – containing diamond earrings, some cash, her and her son’s Aadhaar and PAN cards, and their health scheme cards – was in the rear seat. While Arana was in the car, a passer-by knocked on the window and pointed to some cash lying on the road. Arana got down and picked them up. When Kamte and Francis returned, they noticed Kamte’s bag was missing. They later found the bag on the roadside, said an officer.
