Now, pay ₹100 fine if your car doesn’t have four digits on its number plate

For all those who took pride in flaunting VIP registration numbers on their vehicles, the days of flaunting are over. As per the latest diktat issued by the authorities from the transport department, every vehicle must display four digits on its number plates.

The transport department has said every vehicle must display four digits on its number plates.

The directive was issued to all the regional transport offices (RTOs) by the transport commissioner last week asking them to take necessary steps to ensure that the rule is adhered to.

This means that vehicle owners with VIP registration numbers — between 1 to 999 — will have to compensate for the missing digit/s with equivalent number of ‘zero/s’.

For instance, if the registration number of a vehicle is a single digit ‘9’, it should now be displayed on the number plates as ‘0009’. The same goes for two and three digit unique numbers. The rule applies to even those vehicles that were allotted a unique number at the time of registration in the past.

According to RTO officials, those opting for unique numbers like 1,9, 99, 786 and others, for which they pay a premium, violates the age-old four-digit rule. Hence, the decision will be enforced at the time of vehicle registration itself.
