AIMIM’s deregistration to be revoked soon

The state election commission, had last week, delisted AIMIM and 190 other smaller political parties for failing to submit the audited accounts and tax returns

The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen may get its deregistration revoked in the next two weeks after the party complied with the documents related to the audited accounts and income tax returns of the past three years.

The state election commission (SIC), had last week, delisted AIMIM and 190 other smaller political parties for failing to submit the audited accounts and tax returns.

The party has submitted the documents and tax returns for the past three years and the penalty of Rs1 lakh late last week. The revocation of the deregistration is expected to come into effect in the next two weeks.

“There is provision in the rules of revocation of the action if the party has submitted the due documents. The party has approached us. The procedure of revocation will be completed in about two weeks," state election commissioner JS Saharia told Hindustan Times.

The commission had deregistered 191 parties using its discretionary powers for not submitting the annual accounts and audits. Except for AIMIM, a faction of the Republican Party of India, Tararani Party and Swabhimani Rashtriya Congress have approached the commission for the revocation of the deregistration. The RPI has been registered again after it complied with the documents, while two other parties have asked for three more months for the submission.

The party was recently registered with the SIC.

The SIC had served notices to 326 unrecognised parties for failing to submit annual IT returns and audited accounts and 191 failed to comply and attracted the action.

There were 359 registered parties, including 17 recognised parties with the SIC.

"Most of the deregistered parties were on our list for the name sake and defunct for years. The action has helped us in cleaning the list," said an official from the SIC.
