Aney announced that his party, Vidarbha Rajya Party (ViRA), would contest the upcoming municipal council elections from Wardha, Gondia, Hinganghat, Arvi and Sakoli.

He also announced the names of the candidates who would contest for the post of the president of municipal councils from those areas. He said that the elections would be contested focusing on the creation of a separate state.

Aney had resigned as the advocate general of Maharashtra after publicly voicing his views on a separate statehood for Vidarbha and Marathwada in March this year. He subsequently set up a political party to focus on the issue.

In order to gather support, Aney and his supporters had even gone to Delhi where he spoke with leaders of other political parties such as Bahujan Samaj Party, Trinamool Congress and Aam Aadmi Party.

He alleged that both the BJP and the Congress have betrayed the people of Vidarbha. He, however, said that any person who is in favour of the separate statehood is welcome to join his party.

Aney also said that apart from separate statehood, ViRA would also attack other problems that people in the region have been facing such as farmer suicides and lack of developmental activities.

“It will take time for the party to gather strength but a beginning has to be made and so we will contest the municipal council elections,” he said.

The party also plans to contest the municipal corporation elections of Nagpur, Akola, and Amravati in the region, to be held in next year.
