At counselling session in Ulhasnagar, couple’s kin fight with swords, 10 hurt

Couple began arguing during counselling, after which their relatives went to their houses and returned with weapons

A couple’s counselling session at the Central police station on Tuesday turned into a brawl in which their families attacked each other with swords and knives.

Nine people have been arrested and sent to police custody.

Ten people were injured including six policemen (four of who are women constables).

Twenty-six-year-old Vikash Shirsat, who works in private company, married Neha Murtadkar, 24, last year.

“It was a love marriage. However, they fought almost every day. For the last few months, Neha has been living with her family at Badlapur,” said V Dolas, senior police inspector of Central police station.

According to the police, Vikas claimed he would call his wife several times but she would never respond.

“Vikas had recently approached the Women’s Welfare Centre for help with his marriage. He and his wife were called for counselling, but their relatives also accompanied them,” said Dolas.

The questions during the meet led to a heated argument between the couple.

Within a few minutes, the beat marshal police and Central police station staff rushed to the spot and handled the situation.

“We arrested nine people and lodged a case against them,” said the officer.

The nine arrested have been identified as Samir Changle, 24, Sachin Murtadkar, 21, Yogesh Murtadkar, 24, Rahul Murtadkar, Mahesh Karpe, 36, Vikas Shirsat, 26, Akash Shirsat, 24, Bandu Shirsat, 36, and Amol Shirsat, 28.

A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.
