The long-drawn admission process to medical and dental courses in institutes across the state will end on Friday.
On Thursday, the Supreme Court (SC) directed the state Directorate of Medical Education & Research (DMER) to complete admissions to vacant seats in government and private medical and dental institutes across Maharashtra by October 7.
As the DMER was unable to complete admissions to vacant seats by September 30, the earlier deadline set by the SC, it had sought time until October 7 to do so. This means the DMER will have to complete admissions to the 50 vacant seats in the dental course and 30 in the MBBS course by Friday.
“We had asked for another extension, but the court refused. So now, we will try to finish the process by Friday,” said Dr Pravin Shingare, director, DMER.
This was the third time that DMER had applied for extension of dates to fill up seats in government and private institutes in the state. The DMER’s previous two attempts were rejected by the SC.
“The court made it clear that colleges cannot delay commencement of lectures, so the deadline for admissions was not extended,” said Shingare, adding that all the states that applied for extension have been asked to complete the process by Friday.
Last week, the outcome of a petition filed by DMER in the SC seeking the right to bring deemed colleges under a centralised process, was in the favour of the state. While admissions already done by the institutes were regularised, the remaining seats were ordered to be filled up by DMER and the deadline to finish this process was also set at October 7. “All admissions should be done by then, as there will be no more extensions,” said Shingare.
