Three women and one man were killed in an accident on the Mumbai-Pune expressway on Saturday afternoon after the driver of a car lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a trailer.
The accident took place near the food mall at Bhor Ghat. The police said the driver, who is injured, has been charged with negligence and rash driving.
“Four people are dead, which includes three women and one man. Three people were injured, which includes two men and a woman. A case under section 304 A [causing death by negligence] of the Indian Penal Code has been registered against the driver,” said K Hegaje, senior police inspector of Khopoli police station. According to the police, Pratik Jadhav, 26, picked up the six passengers at Wakad Phata, in Pune, to take them to Mumbai in a multi-utility vehicle (MUV). At 2.22pm, the MUV crashed into a trailer. The car was then dragged for a few kilometres by the trailer. A motorist told the police that the MUV had been trying to overtake the trailer and lost control as it was driving at high speed.
The deceased were identified as Janki Nandukumar Nanekar, 27, a resident of Ambernath; Rani Gaur, 25, from Madhya Pradesh; and Sushmit Abhijit Mutha, 22, from Ahmednagar. The third woman’s identity was not known at the time of going to press. The injured included Priti Rami, 34, a passenger, who sustained a fracture in her leg. Jadhav also suffered injuries but has been declared out of danger. The identity of the third injured person was not known. “The car driver failed to gauge the speed of the moving trailer and rammed into it,” said a highway traffic official.
