Heavy rain leaves Thane, Kalyan officegoers stuck

Mumbai city news: Officegoers were stuck in traffic along the Ghodbunder and Eastern Express Highway during morning peak hours

The heavy rain since Tuesday morning left officegoers from Mumbai’s suburbs – Thane, Dombivli and Kalyan – stuck .

The regional disaster management cell of Thane Municipal corporation issued a high tide alert and asked people from low-lying areas to stay indoors.

Thane received more than 83mm of rain since Monday, of which around 20mm was on Tuesday morning.

Officegoers were stuck in traffic along the Ghodbunder and Eastern Express Highway during morning peak hours.

Santosh Kadam, regional disaster management officer, said, “The total rainfall for June is 571mm. We have received eight complaints of tree falls and four of fire.”

The bridge at Ulhasnagar has submerged.

Kadam said, “The IMD has issued a high-tide alert. People from low-lying areas should avoid venturing out .”

The high tide usually leads to waterlogging in Vitawa, Anandnagar, Mumbra, Vrundavan society and Vandana bus stop.

Meanwhile, in Ulhanagar, the bridge connecting Ulhasnagar camp 3 (West) to the railway station has submerged.

Ulhasnagar city has received 414mm rain so far.

”As the bridge has submerged, I could not ride to the station on Tuesday morning. I had to take another small bridge,” said Vicky Idnani, 27, a resident of Ulhasnagar 3.

Kalyan- Dombivli, too, saw heavy downpour, leading to water logging in several shops near the station area . “The drains are not cleaned,” said a shopkeeper who did not wish to named.

Kalyan-Dombivli received 429 mm rainfall in June.
