In a hurry to clear signal at Bandra, tempo driver crushes biker to death

A tempo driver, allegedly in a hurry to cross a signal before it turned red, crashed into a bike and killed its rider in Kherwadi, Bandra (East) on Monday. The driver had fled, but the Kherwadi police traced him and arrested him on Tuesday.

According to the Kherwadi police, the incident took place at 6.15pm on the southbound stretch of the western express highway, just ahead of the Kalanagar junction. The biker, Gulabchand Vishvakarma, 48, was on his Hero Splendor bike and was wearing a helmet.

The tempo driver, Hanif Saha, 20, was speeding and hit the bike from behind. Owing to the impact, Vishvakarma’s helmet was damaged and he sustained head injuries. Passersby took him to Bhabha hospital, but he was declared dead on arrival. Vishwakarma, a welder and a resident of Dharavi was the only earning member of his family. He is survived by his wife and three children.

Saha told the police he fled as he feared other motorists would lynch him. He was traced and arrested the day after the accident.
