Amid a controversy over the Mumbai civic body passing a resolution to make the singing of Vande Mataram compulsory in schools, Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray on Sunday said the government should enact a law to make Vande Mataram mandatory.

Thackeray was speaking at the 57th foundation day of Marmik, a weekly founded by Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray. He said, “There should not be such a big issue over Vande Mataram. If there is, the government should just make a law to make it compulsory.

Thackeray added, some Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ministers also said there is no need to mandatorily sing Vande Mataram. “A few BJP ministers said that singing Vande Mataram cannot be a measure of patriotism. I want to ask the BJP if it will send such ministers out of the country,” Thackeray said.
