Man kills 72-year-old friend over fight for space on bench at railway station in Mumbai

Former Navy man hit his 72-year-old friend on the head with a bamboo stick following a heated argument at Khadavli station

A former Indian Navy man, Dhananjay Kumar Sinha,54, was arrested by the Kalyan rural police (Titwala) on Monday on charges of killing a senior citizen near Khadavli railway station.

Khadavli station, on the Mumbai suburban rail network’s central line, is around 58km from Mumbai city.

The deceased, identified as Kanu Jadhav,72, was hit with a bamboo stick on his head, and succumbed to injuries by the time he was rushed to hospital.

Police officials said both Jadhav and Sinha used to work as porters and had been staying in Khadavli railway station premises for the past several months.

On Monday afternoon, the two of them were sitting on a bench at the station and got into a heated argument over who was occupying how much space. Pradeep Kasbe, police inspector from Kalyan rural police station (Titwala), said: “They were good friends and were talking to each other, but during conversation, Sinha got angry with Jadhav for not giving him enough space to sit. This led to a fight, and in a fit of rage, Sinha picked up a bamboo stick lying on the ground and hit Jadhav on his head with it.”

Sinha was arrested under section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code and has been remanded in police custody.
