A 44-year-old marathon runner from Dombivli, who had a stroke after Sunday’s Mumbai Marathon, slipped into a comatose state after he underwent a surgery late on Monday night.

Doctors, who are treating Sukesh Kabra, said his ‘intracranial pressure’ shot up on Monday night and had to be rushed into surgery immediately. “He has been given heavy sedatives and will be in the intensive care unit for the next 24 hours under observation. We will have to see tomorrow how he responds,” said a doctor at Bombay Hospital, Marine Lines.
Although the incident occurred after the marathon, doctors said the stroke was unrelated to the run. The stroke led to the paralysis of the left side of his body. Dr Shubha Patil, a fellow runner, said, “He suddenly began slurring his speech and then collapsed.”
The doctor who is supervising his treatment said his left leg and arm are immobile. Kabra runs a family business.
Meanwhile, Promodsing Girase, a Bengaluru resident, who had suffered a massive cardiac arrest after the run, underwent angiography, where doctors identified blockages in two arteries. “In one of the arteries the blockage was big. We have performed angioplasty, and he is still in the intensive care unit,” the doctor said.
Girase’s family members flew in on Sunday evening, after a fellow runner had put out a public post on Facebook.
Doctors at the marathon medical camp said 2,300 of the 44,407 participants required medical assistance.
