Medical students in Mumbai unhappy with lengthy admission schedule

A day after the Directorate of Medical Education & Research (DMER) released the admission brochure and schedule for health science courses in the state, parents and students said they weren’t happy with the long-drawn admission process. The admissions are scheduled to begin on June 28 and will end in the first week of August.

“Even though registration for admissions will start from June 28, the first seat allotment list will only be released after July 27. There’s absolutely no need to drag this process for so long,” said Sudha Shenoy, a parent. She added that despite delay in admission brochure release, the DMER’s plan has many loopholes.

Many were also surprised to see that seven private institutes are yet to receive clearance from the Medical Council of India. “Last year, only two colleges were waiting for clearance till August-September and that had led to much chaos towards the end of the admission season as students rushed to grab those seats. This year, with the future of seven colleges left in hanging, I can’t imagine the chaos it will lead to,” added Shenoy.

Most are now waiting for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) results in order to get better clarity. “Hopefully once the results are declared, DMER will have much clearer instructions for all. We don’t want to put up with another year of a delayed start to the academic session,” said Manash Jain, a student. NEET results are expected on or before June 26 and DMER is hoping to start the academic session by August 1 this year.
