Metro work causes pipeline burst in Gorai

Metro works in the city led to another water pipeline burst on Tuesday, this time in Gorai. Officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said a 36-inch water pipeline at Shimpoli, Chikuwadi on the link road was affected during the excavation work.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA) is undertaking works for the Metro-2A line (Dahisar to DN Nagar) in the area. The 18.6-km long Metro corridor 2A is part of the larger 41.2km line between Dahisar East- Bandra- Mandale.

Local Congress corporator Shiva Shetty said close to 400 buildings in the vicinity, including areas namely Yogi Nagar, Dharma Nagar, MSB Colony, Chikuwadi and Gorai 1 and 2, were affected owing to the rupture.

Atul Rao, R Central (Borivli) ward officer, said they were trying their best to restore water supply. “Once the work is completed, we will assess the damage and collect a fine from the MMRDA,” he said.

Dilip Kawathkar, joint project director, MMRDA, said, “A pipeline of 900mm diameter got damaged during piling on the Dahisar west to DN Nagar corridor near Shimpoli. A team of JKumar along with the team of BMC reached the site immediately and the damaged pipeline was repaired at 6.15 pm. The water supply has been restored.”

The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) implementing the Metro-3 line (Colaba-Bandra-Seepz) has been asked to cough up close to Rs12 lakh for damaging water pipelines on a number of occasions in South Mumbai.

A senior official from MMRDA said that lack of mapping of the underground utility lines results in the ruptures.

MMRDA signs agreement with DMRC

The Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA) on Tuesday signed an agreement with the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) for implementation of the Metro-6 corridor (Swami Samarth Nagar-Jogeshwari-Vikhroli). According to officials, DMRC will implement the entire project, from inviting bids to procurement of systems for running the project, on behalf of MMRDA. The 14.5km corridor will have 13 stations and will cost Rs5,490 crore.
