Mumbai civic body plans to set up Rs45-crore gymkhana at Mahalaxmi for staff

While several of the city’s civic amenities are poorly maintained and left unattended owing to a paucity of funds, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) plans to construct a gymkhana for its employees at Mahalaxmi, at a whopping cost of Rs45 crore. A provision for this has been made in the civic budget.

According to the proposed plan, the gymkhana will have a swimming pool, play rooms, a gymnasium, lawn tennis court and a badminton and squash court. It will also have a conference hall and guest house. The tenders for the project have been invited and a contractor selected for the work.

Meanwhile, a civic-run swimming pool in Chembur shut 10 years ago and is yet to be reopened. In 2007, the BMC had shut the pool so repairs could be carried out. In 2011, it had allocated Rs12 for the reconstruction of the pool.

The revamp involves the construction of a gymnasium, play areas and a parking lot. However, with the work going on at a snail’s pace, Chembur residents have lost hope.
