Mumbai cyber crime: Bandra school teacher pays ₹4.1 lakh to help British ‘fiancé’, is conned

Mumbai city news: The police said that the accused befriended the teacher through a matrimonial site on April 4. Sunny Clinton called up the teacher and told her that he was a British army officer posted at the UK embassy in Delhi.

A woman who teaches at a Bandra school lost Rs4.1 lakh to an alleged cyber fraudster who posed as a British army officer and offered to marry her.

The police said that the accused befriended the teacher through a matrimonial site on April 4. Sunny Clinton called up the teacher and told her that he was a British army officer posted at the UK embassy in Delhi. They developed a friendship and soon Clinton proposed marriage to the teacher.

On April 17, however, he called up the victim and told her that he had to rush to London as his mother was unwell.

After a few days, the teacher came to know from one of Clinton’s friends that he was returning to India but did not have any money in rupees.

He requested for some money to book a hotel for a few days. Accordingly, the woman sent him Rs61,000 in an State Bank of India account.

Clinton then told her that he would meet her on April 28 but on April 29, the teacher got a call from a woman claiming to be a customs’ officer from Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport.

The officer said that they had detailed Clinton as he was carrying more cash than was allowed and that the teacher would have to pay Rs3.8 lakh to prevent him from being
jailed.
