The seemingly never ending wait for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) result finally came to an end on June 23. But even as students and parents celebrated high scores and good ranks, they were sobered by the fact that the good performances could mean a tough fight to get into popular colleges and courses.
“Students who had scored above 600 in NEET 2016 were within the top 200 in All India Ranks (AIR), but this year, too many students have scored above 600. So those with 600-620 marks are in 1500-1800 AIR bracket,” said a parent. He said better scores will automatically lead to higher cut-offs during admissions this year. “More and more students will find it difficult to get through the institute of their choice, especially government-run ones,” he said.
According to a statement released by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on Friday, the top 25 rank holders of the country all fall between 697 to 681 marks bracket, with the top rank bagged by Punjab’s Navdeep Singh (men) and Nikita Goyal (women). Pune’s Abhishek Dogra bagged an impressive AIR 5 with his score of 691 out of 720.
Parents and students are also worried that those students hoping to find seats in nearby colleges will now have to opt for far-flung institutes if they do not want to skip another year. “Until last year, the government-run institutes would stop admissions at 480 and 500 scores. But this year, too many students with 600 and above scores are going to line up for those seats. Those below 600 in NEET will have a tough time finding seats in institutes in Mumbai or in the vicinity,” said Sudha Shenoy, another parent.

{{/usCountry}}Around 1.39 lakh students form the state had registered to appear for NEET 2017 and there’s still no clarity on how many cleared the exam. The state Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) will release a provisional state merit list on July 12. “We have not received any information from CBSE yet about the performance of Maharashtra’s students, but a provisional list will be out as per our schedule,” said Dr Pravin Shingare, director, DMER.
The admissions process in state will commence with online registrations from June 28.
