Six days after the Pawan Hans chopper crash, ONGC employee V Bindulal Babu’s family in Mumbai received his body on Friday morning. His funeral was held at Evershine City crematorium in Vasai (East) in the afternoon.

His seven-year-old son lit the funeral pyre, aided by the deceased’s younger brother.

Babu’s body, the last to be recovered from sea, was sent for post-mortem on Thursday to Cooper hospital in Vile Parle, from where it was transported to his house in Evershine Solitaire complex, Vasai, on Friday morning.

Relatives said the 50-year-old’s body was identified by his wife from the T-shirt he had worn and his handkerchief.

Babu’s seven-year-old son lit the pyre, with the help of his uncle.

Babu, who worked with the ONGC as deputy general manager, is survived by wife Shyni, 42, a diabetologist who runs a clinic in the suburb, and their two children — a daughter who studies in Class 12, and a son, who is Class 2 student, Rajan said. “My cousin was​ mild-mannered and hard-working man. It’s a big loss.”

Speaking about Babu, his cousin said he had been a courageous man,who in 2005, had saved around 100 people after a fire broke out at the oil rig.
