BMC road scam: Maharashtra government to investigate 200 road work contracts

Contracts awarded for five road works have been investigated and major irregularities found in the inquiry conducted by a BMC committee.

The Maharashtra government on Thursday said a detailed investigation into the multi-crore Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)road scam will be conducted.

The government said it will transfer the probe to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in case of any discrepancy in the existing probe into the repair and rebuilding of 34 roads, said Dr Ranjit Patil, minister of state for home, in the legislative council.

The minister said so far, contracts awarded for five road works have been investigated and major irregularities found in the inquiry conducted by a BMC committee. “In view of this, it was decided that another 200 contracts will be investigated,” Dr Patil said in the Upper House.

He added that the existing procedures for tender estimation, awarding contracts and other procedures will be investigated and anomalies will be rectified. The state government will seek an action taken report from the BMC , he said.
