Sakinaka constable saves drunk man from jumping off cliff

The man was inebriated and infuriated as his employer had not paid him

A 29-year-old constable from the Sakinaka police saved the life of a 35-year-old man who was to jump of a cliff on Wednesday evening because he had not received his salary.

According to Sakinaka police, they received a distress call from the control room around 5pm which alerted them about a man trying to commit suicide from the top of a Sangharsh Nagar hill in Andheri East.

Sub-inspector Mhatre rushed to the spot with constable Suhas Nevase. Nevase climbed the hill barefoot and reached the man.

“He negotiated with the man for nearly 30 minutes and convinced him to be brought down safely. The hill is about 50m high. It was risky as Nevase could have fallen off. The man could have jumped off,” said a police officer.

The man, identified as Abdul Mansuri, worked in a hotel and stays on the footpath. He is from Rajasthan. The man was inebriated and infuriated as his employer had not paid him.

“When we reached the spot, there were about a 100 people there and the man was standing on the edge of the hill. It was difficult to reach there. We had called the fire brigade but I thought the man would have jumped by the time the firemen arrived, so I decided to try and save him,” Nevase said.

“I have commando training. I kept a distance of 5 feet from him and spoke to him. I promised to help him with his salary. He was finally convinced,” the officer added.
