Sakinaka model rape case: Accused cop leaves for hospital without permission, angers court

The court asked for a written reply from a police escort team which took Khapte to the hospital.

Suspended police inspector Sunil Khapte, who is in jail for his alleged involvement in the 2015 Sakinaka model rape case, left for St George Hospital without informing a sessions court, which was to frame charges against him on Saturday.

The court asked for a written reply from a police escort team which took Khapte to the hospital.

According the prosecution, on April 3 last year, a 29-year-old model was allegedly raped and molested by police officials at Sakinaka police station. The police have arrested eight people, including Khapte, in the case.

During the hearing, the court came to know that Khapte was missing, leaving his lawyer, Aditya Mithe, dumbfounded. According to the rules, an accused can be taken to a hospital if an in-house medical officer recommends it.

Bypassing the rules, neither Khapte nor the police took permission of the court. The court was informed that he was not feeling well.

However, the medical officer told the court that Khapte was fine.
