Sena MP Rahul Shewale’s wife, 17 others get 1-year-jail in 2014 poll violence case

The sessions court on Tuesday sentenced sitting Member of Parliament (MP) Rahul Shewale’s wife, Kamini, and 17 other Shiv Sena workers to one year in jail in a mob violence incident during the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, in which a head constable sustained grievous injuries.

Vikas Thorbole, the head constable, sustained the injuries during a clash between Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and Shiv Sena workers.

Thorbole was on poll duty in Mankhurd and was caught in the clash when violence broke out at Maharashtra Nagar.

The incident occurred when there were rumours of money being distributed from a car that had an MNS sticker on it.

A group of workers from both parties had gathered around the vehicle. A police team was dispatched to the spot and until then, Thorbole was asked to sit inside the car to avoid escalation of the incident.

However, the situation got out of hand when the group started pelting stones at the car and Thorbole sustained severe head injuries.

Judge DK Gudadhe found the accused guilty of unlawful assembly and mischief causing damage.
