Nine killed after building collapses in Bhiwandi near Mumbai

Six people died and several others were feared trapped under the debris of a three-storeyed building which collapsed in Gaibinagar, Bhiwandi on Sunday morning. Twenty people have been rescued.

Nine people were killed and 10 others injured when a three-storey building collapsed in Gaibinagar on the outskirts of Mumbai on Sunday morning.

Among the deceased were a woman and her four sons.

The building was in a dilapidated condition, said officials from Bhiwandi Municipal Corporation.

Sunil Zalke, public relations officer of Bhiwandi said: “The building collapsed at 9.30 in the morning. We have rescued 20 people who have suffered injuries and are admitted to various hospitals.

An emergency meeting was convened by Thane guardian minister Eknath Shinde at Bhiwandi Nizampur Municipal Corporation office in view of the incident. District collector Mahendra Kalyankar and municipal commissioner E Ravindran were present at the meeting.

The collector had earlier rushed to the site to supervise the relief and rescue operation which was hampered by the heavy rains that lashed the district on Sunday.

Thane municipal commissioner Sanjeev Jaiswal, after visiting the disaster control cell, issued a warning to residents of the city not to step out of their houses unless it was absolutely essential.
