After housing societies in Bandra and Andheri in Mumbai buckled up to segregate their garbage, it is now the turn of hotels and hospitals to do their part in waste management.
To enable these smaller institutions to compost waste, the municipal ward office in Bandra (West) has planned to get mobile vans with a composting equipment in it.
Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) wants the city’s bulk waste generators, that are less than 20,000 square metres, to segregate and process their waste.
The proposal will come up in the next ward meeting where assistant municipal commissioner Sharad Ughade will take a call. According to a solid waste management official of the ward, the plan will provide an alternative solution for bulk water generator hotels and other establishments with less than 20,000 sqm of space.
The official from Bandra municipal ward said, “More than 70 bulk waste generators, including Lilavati and Bhabha hospitals and educational institutions, will be issued final notices by Tuesday.” As to Andheri’s bulk waste generators, K/West ward officials said that about 22 of them were sent notices and six will soon get the equipment to segregate and compost their waste.
With an aim to reduce the waste sent to dumping grounds by 10% to15% in the next three months, BMC sent notices to 1,250 bulk waste generating institutions to segregate and process waste or it will not get picked up. Between January and May this year, the civic body had also sent notices to over 23,000 housing societies, which failed to segregate waste.
