Make the long weekend count, by travelling back in time, heading to a field of flowers that will rival any Bollywood flick, or just chatting up the seniors on a stunning beach.

There’s another long weekend coming up, and you probably plan to spend it lounging about, vegging. Don’t waste all those holidays. Check out places you’ve probably heard about (vaguely), but are close enough to finally get to. And there’s adventure waiting at every spot.

Are you a history buff?

In Bijapur, history comes alive.

Drive down to Bijapur in Karnataka to see a 600-year-old open-air museum, palaces, mosques, temples and fortifications.

You could spend much more than four days in Champaner.

Or you can head north to the ancient city of Champaner in Gujarat and wander about in an archaeological park, rich with palaces, arches, tombs, stepwells and temples.

Perhaps you prefer flowers

This is the best time of year to head to the Kaas plateau (see main photo above). You know it’s on your bucket list... and while you’re there, also check out the Sajjangad fort, that Koyna dam you keep hearing about, and the famous Pratapgad fort.

You’ll think you’re in Napa Valley, without all the pretensions.

Tour the wine country in Nashik, visit the vineyards, do some tastings and relax in the kind of hushed lush greenery you dream of all year round.

Keeping it simple?

Drive a few hours north to Bordi, where life is still simple, or Dahanu, where the simple comes with an optional swimming pool. Here, the beaches are still beautiful, the sunsets are golden and you’re bound to make friends with the senior Bawas out for their evening constitutional.

You’ll find that time slows down in Dahanu.
