Train fall death: It took 29 min to take South Sudanese student to Mumbai hospital, says report

On July 12, the victim fell on the tracks while alighting from a moving train at Dadar station, and died six days later.

A South Sudanese student’s fall, which ultimately led to her death, was a result of her attempt to alight a moving train, a four-member committee formed by the central railway (CR) to look into the incident concluded on Friday. However, it said the station administration took about half-an-hour to take the 24-year-old victim, Jowahir Abdullah Noah, to the hospital.

On July 12, Noah boarded Koyna Express from Miraj junction. On reaching Dadar, the group alighted the moving train, but Noah lost balance and slipped on to the tracks. She succumbed to her injuries on July 18.

According to the committee’s report, Noah tried to alight the train at 8.06pm and fell at 8.08pm. A co-passenger lifted her from the tracks and she was put on a stretcher by a porter at 8.20pm. She was taken to the emergency medical room (EMR). The report mentions on-duty RPF staff Santosh Killakar called emergency ambulance 108 at 8.16pm. She was then shifted to Sion Hospital at 8.35pm, which means it took 29 minutes for the authorities to give her further treatment.

“The doctors at EMR tried to revive her. On realising that her condition was deteriorating, she was rushed to Sion Hospital,” said a senior central railway official. “The committee report clearly specifies the victim was given immediate medical attention in the EMR. She was later referred to Sion Hospital,” said SK Jain, divisional railway manager, central railway.
