With no pumping station, Sion, Kurla and Matunga in Mumbai get flooded

Mumbai city news: The pumping station near Mahul creek is to be constructed on a salt-pan land and is yet to get a green nod from the environment ministry.

If you thought that Sion, Kurla and Matunga will not experience water logging this year, let BMC give you a reality check.

Civic officials said that until the Mahul pumping station is operational, they would continue to depend on de-watering pumps which are unlikely to be effective.

While heavy rains coupled with high-tide have been flooding the city, areas like road number 24 in Sion, Babasaheb Ambedkar Road, Kurla railway station, King’s Circle and Gandhi market are infamous for flooding after a few spells of rainfall.

The pumping station near Mahul creek is to be constructed on a salt-pan land and is yet to get a green nod from the environment ministry. It is a part of the eight-pumping stations designed under the Brihanmumbai storm water drains project (Brimstowad).

A civic official from the storm water drains (SWD) department said, “We can’t prevent flooding in Sion and Kurla areas until the pumping station is functional.” Some of these areas are also mentioned in BMC’s list of 66 chronic flooding spots where the civic body installed 313 de-watering pumps this monsoon.
