MUMBAI: Just four days into the month, this is already Mumbai’s wettest October in the past three years. From October 1 till 5.30pm on Tuesday, the Santacruz weather station, representative of Mumbai, recorded 47.4mm rain, almost 20mm above the normal rainfall till October 4. Colaba recorded 51.6mm during the same time.
The monthly total for October in 2014 and 2015 were 31.3mm and 23.4mm, respectively. The highest October total was recorded in 2006 when the city received 238.6mm, followed by 2009 with 223.3mm rainfall.
Weathermen said more rainfall has been predicted for the Konkan coast, including Mumbai. The city is just 8.4mm short of completing its average monthly rainfall quota for October. On Tuesday, heavy rain lashed the city, especially in the suburbs , as the Santacruz weather observatory recorded 31mm rain over a span of just three hours. Between 8.30am to 8.30pm Tuesday, Santacruz weather station recorded 35.4 mm while Colaba recorded 10.8mm.
The city has been experiencing showers even after September. Weathermen said that this was because the withdrawal line for the southwest monsoon had not crossed Jaisalmer yet.
“Suburban parts of the city recorded heavy rain amounting to over 30mm in less than three hours, owing to an upper air cyclonic circulation over north Konkan areas, parts of Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh,” said KS Hosalikar, deputy-director general, western region, India Meteorological Department. “Isolated, heavy to very heavy rain is expected over north Konkan areas, including Mumbai, till Thursday.”
