WASHINGTON: Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump threatened to jail Democratic rival Hillary Clinton and accused her husband of abusing women during a vicious debate that was a make-or-break event for the former facing a massive revolt in his party.

As they strode on to the stage at Washington University in St Louis, Clinton and Trump made it clear what the rest of the evening would be like. They barely acknowledged each other and didn’t even shake hands, as candidates do.

With his campaign in a tailspin after leading Republicans rescinded their endorsement, Trump apologised for “locker room talk” in which he bragged about kissing and groping women but said “Bill Clinton was abusive to women”.

He also threatened Clinton with imprisonment if he wins. “If I win, I’m going to instruct the attorney general to get a special prosecutor to look into your situation because there’s never been so many lies, so much deception,” he said.

Clinton said Trump’s lewd comments reflected his true self. “This is who Donald Trump is... the question our country must answer is that this is not who we are.”
