1,846 degrees awarded at IIT-B convocation

The man who designed the official symbol of the Indian rupee was among the hundreds of students who were awarded their PhD and masters degrees at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) at Powai on Friday.

Uday Kumar, 32, like the other PhD students, was dressed in a white kurta and orange stole, and was awarded his degree amid loud cheering and hooting. "I completed my PhD, which revolved mainly around Tamil typography. IIT has played a major role in helping me gain a deeper understanding of a relatively rare subject," he said.

Kumar is one of the 1,846 students who receive their degrees during this year's convocation. Last year, the institute awarded 1,691degrees. The ceremony is spread over two days. While the post-graduate students were awarded degrees on Friday, the undergraduates will receive their degrees on Sunday.

"To be receiving a degree from IIT is the best feeling in the world. It has been three years of hard work, but it has paid off," said Dhaval Bonde, 24. For others, it was a matter of surpassing obstacles and emerging triumphant. National research professor Dr MS Valiathan, the chief guest at the ceremony, said, "I wish students luck in the challenges that lie ahead and hope that they will all bring pride to the country."
