Ten people were injured after an elevator in a newly-constructed residential tower in Goregaon (West) came crashing down five floors on Sunday afternoon. The incident took place around 1pm at Chamunda Jewel CHS in Teen Dongri area.
According to the police, the 19-storey tower was constructed a year ago and has several lifts. The maximum capacity of the lifts is six persons. “There were 10 people in the lift. The elevator fell due to overcrowding,” said Arun Jadhav, senior inspector, Goregaon police station.
All the injured were taken to Surana hospital in Malad (West). While five of them were discharged after being given first aid, the remaining — Venkatesh Bajaj, Dinesh Shrivastav, Jasmine Jain, Darshan Gill, and Pravin Jain — are undergoing treatment for compression fractures.
The police have registered a case against the firm responsible for the maintenance of the lift and the manufacturer. “A case of negligence has been registered under IPC section 337 for causing hurt, section 338 for causing grievous hurt by act endangering life and personal safety of others and section 34 for common intent,” Jadhav said. The liftman was not present in the lift.
