Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s 30-minute visit to Ramabai Nagar slums in Ghatkopar this February has helped transform this shantytown, which has a population of 80,000.

His public meeting and interaction with the locals has spurred development work. Chief Minister Ashok Chavan will inaugurate a 2,200 sq metre auditorium this month. There will also be space for self-help groups and a library.
Guardian minister Naseem Khan on Tuesday met officials and asked them to stay on track with the development works. Ramabai Nagar will get 31 toilet blocks with 510 toilets by year-end. The water supply pipes will be strengthened as will the storm-water drains. The state has cleared Rs 12 crore for these basic amenities for this year. The total cost of development works is around Rs 100 crore.
