As many as 12,456 cases have been recorded by the traffic police since Thursday last week, as part of a crackdown on motorists using dark films on windowpanes and windshields of their vehicles.

The traffic police have collected over Rs. 12 lakh as penalty so far.

Police said that the fine for the offence is Rs. 100 and the offender is booked under provisions of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989. The drive is being conducted throughout the country an apex court directive, which expressed concern over vehicles with dark windows being used for anti-social activities.

“Once an offender is caught, his license is impounded and a receipt is issued to him. The license is returned only when the black film is removed,” said a senior traffic official.

Police said that while 1,623 motorists were penalised on Thursday, 2,825 were booked on Friday, 3,057 on Saturday, 1,632 on Sunday and 3,319 motorists were booked on Monday.
