A video of a teenaged girl standing on the railway tracks at Malad railway station while a train is approaching has gone viral.

The motorman stopped the train in the nick of time, while other passengers stepped in to get the girl off the tracks.

The incident happened around 2pm on Friday. The closed circuit television camera (CCTV) installed at the platform has captured the entire incident.

According to the police, the 15-year-old girl was standing in the middle of the tracks at platform number 1 on the down slow line.

The video shows the girl standing firm even as a local train is seen approaching. The police said after checking the footage of the incident, it appears that the girl was attempting suicide and was rescued in time.

“The motorman of the train noticed the girl as soon as the train was nearing the platform. The girl was on the tracks while commuters were standing on the platform shouting. The motorman immediately stopped the train and the girl was taken off the tracks by other passengers,” said a high-ranking officer of the Railway Protection Force (RPF).

The police counselled her for a few hours and informed her parents who reached Malad railway station.

“It seems that the girl may be under acute mental stress in order to take such a step,” the officer said. CCTV cameras were later checked to ascertain the exact sequence of events in the incident.

GRP officers said the girl relaxed only after her sister came with their father and they consoled her.
