2,000 gather to make Mulund spotless

More than 2,000 residents participated in a mega clean-up drive in Mulund on Sunday morning.

More than 2,000 residents participated in a mega clean-up drive in Mulund on Sunday morning.

The drive, organised along the 9.5-km stretch of the busy and prominent Jawahar Road, brought both celebs and policymakers to this quiet suburb. It was jointly organised by the Nahar Group, Jain International Trade Organisation (JITO) and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The clean-up efforts began at 9am and ended at 1pm.

Joining the bandwagon was the Hindustan Times team, which had kick-started the Clean My Mumbai drive a week ago.

Divided into teams, the participants cleaned areas such as Jain Mandir Road, Jawahar Road and Sarvodaya Nagar in the span of five hours.

Apart from cleaning the area, residents also took the initiative to beautify the area by repainting the yellow and black dividers on the roads. “This was an excellent way to spend a Sunday morning. I feel good about contributing to keep my city clean,” said Shrinivas Shevde, 42, a Mulund resident.

Actors Manisha Koirala, Gulshan Grover and Mahima Chaudhary were also in attendance, as were member of Parliament Kirit Somaiya and MLA Sardar Tara Singh.
Somaiya urged people to take this drive to every individual in the city. “People should be cautious while eating paan or chocolate and should not throw the wrapper or spit in public places,” he said.
