The Mira Road police, late on Thursday, arrested a 28-year-old auto driver, who was among the group of drivers who allegedly attacked an India Against Corruption activist after he enquired about new tariff cards at a traffic chowky outside Mira Road station. One more accused has been arrested.
The police said Anilkumar Nirmal, a Kashimira resident, was part of the mob of 15 to 20 people who are still wanted in the case. Nirmal told the police that the victim, Rakesh Sarawgi, 45, used to complain about auto drivers incessantly, regarding fare refusals and non-functional meters, which had angered the drivers.
“Nirmal and one more accused have been booked under charges of attempt to murder, rioting and criminal intimidation,” said senior inspector D Kshirsagar of Mira Road police station.
Sarawagi was discharged from Bhagwati hospital on Friday. Priti Sharma-Memon, an IAC volunteer, said the organisation was seeking legal opinion on the sections the police have applied in the case.
Sarawgi was hit with a sharp object on his forehead, which left an inch-deep wound.
