Sixteen-year-old Manju Gollar hanged herself at her Thane residence on Saturday.

Gollar is the 13th student to commit suicide in and around Mumbai.

A Class 11 student of Dadar Vidyamandir Junior College, Gollar was alone at her Wagle Estate residence when she hanged herself from a ceiling fan. Her father Maruti (45), an autorickshaw driver, mother Gangi (38), who works in a private company, were away at work. Her brothers were also out. A neighbour found the body around 5.30 pm.

The suicide note said that she could not cope with the ‘tensions’ in her life. “The parents said she was good at studies and never had any problems with anyone,” said Police Inspector Arun Salvi. The police plan to check Gollar’s mobile phone records to see who she last spoke with.

Nearly 20 km away in Vashi on Friday night, a 19-year student college student who was missing for five days allegedly committed suicide by jumping in front of a running train.

Raju Sontake, an acquaintance said Sharma was under pressure due to examinations. “On Friday night, Shinku’s brother Rinku had received a text message from him,” said Sontake. “The message read, ‘I am not doing well in studies because of which I am upset. Please take care of everyone at home. I am going to give my life on the railway tracks tonight’.”

Sharma was a Class 12 student of Mehta College in Chembur. His preliminary exams were to begin on January 11 and he went missing the day before.

The police are also probing whether it is a case of murder. “ Someone else could have also sent the text message [to the brother],” said a police officer.
