Doctors from the Directorate of Health Services (DHS) working in state-run medical colleges such as JJ Hospital in Mumbai and Nagpur Medical College might be permanently transferred to rural areas. Around 200 doctors in the state from the DHS hold posts in medical colleges.
In a meeting on Tuesday Jayant Banthia, additional chief secretary of health department, announced this plan.
“Filling posts in rural areas is important. We are allowing candidates to choose the location of practice among vacant posts. They should be comfortable with the decision,” said Bhushan Gagrani, secretary of health department.
But doctors said that this limit their career progress.
“After working in dispensaries and hospitals in rural areas for several years, we have got a chance to work at a high position in a medical college. Now, if I am transferred to rural areas, I will opt for private practice,” said a medical superintendent from a state-run hospital requesting anonymity.
