A 21-year-old was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly killing his friend who had allowed him to stay at his Santacruz house.

The accused Shiv Kumar Gupta and deceased Suresh Yadav, 20, were childhood friends. While Gupta worked at a bookstall, Yadav worked as a driver for tourist vehicles. According to police, the incident occurred at 4.40am at Gupta’s rented house in Patra slum in Santacruz (W).

Gupta told police that Yadav had been living and working in the city since eight months. He had offered to find a job for him and had also promised to allow him to stay at his place.

Gupta came to Mumbai 20 days ago and started sharing the room in which Yadav was staying. Soon, Yadav started forcing him to do all the household work. He would abuse him if he didn’t finish the work.

“Gupta expected Yadav to finish all the work before he returned,” said Madhukar Chaudhari, senior police inspector, Santacruz police station.

On Wednesday morning, seeing that there was nothing to eat, Yadav flared up. In a fit of rage, Gupta allegedly slit Yadav’s throat using a kitchen knife.
