22-yr-old man beaten up for refusing to call off wedding

A 22-year-old man was allegedly beaten up, his office ransacked and looted by eight people on Sunday in Santacruz. The accused also threatened to kill Moinuddin Rajput, if he proceeded with his marriage, scheduled to take place in a few days, the police said.

The police suspect that the person heading the group of the accused, Muzzamil Shaikh, 22, could be linked to the victim’s fiancé.

“Shaikh had warned Rajput against getting married to his fiance in February this year. However, Rajput did not pay heed to the threat,” said police sub-inspector, Vakola Police, Sandeep Mode.

He added, “When their threats were ineffective, Shaikh, along with seven accomplices, finally came to Rajput’s Santacruz based computer service centre on Sunday afternoon. Shaikh had a heated argument with Rajput and abused him. When Rajput did not look intimidated, the accused, along with his accomplices, started beating him up.”

Rajput, in his complaint to the police said., “Shaikh had been threatening me against marrying my fiancée for some time. On Sunday, he came to my office, beat me up, and said that if I remained adamant, he would kill me.”

A case of dacoity has been registered against the accused at Vakola police station. Of the eight accused, Shaikh and one accomplice, Feroz Sheikh, 33, were arrested. The police are still on the lookout for the others.

“Investigations have revealed that Shaikh is not amongst the girl’s family members or relatives. We are investigating whether he was her estranged lover,” said senior police inspector Rajendra Pardesi, Vakola police station.
