The police registered a case of rioting against 25 unidentified persons for ransacking Bhayander-based Kasturi Hospital, destroying property, and injuring four staff members.
The incident took place after an accident patient, who was undergoing treatment at the hospital, was asked to shift to another hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
Nasir Shaikh (18), a resident of Bhayandar, met with an accident after he rammed into a stationed dumper on September 6 and sustained grievous injuries. Shaikh’s friend, who was riding pillion, took him to Kasturi Hospital in Bhayandar. However, on September 11, hospital authorities asked Shaikh’s family to shift him to another hospital.
A doctor from Kasturi Hospital told the police that this was because Shaikh’s family could not bear the expenses of the hospital. Therefore, they advised them to go to KEM Hospital.
The family instead admitted Shaikh to a private clinic at Mira Road on September 11. Shaikh died while undergoing treatment at the hospital on Tuesday.
Agitated over Shaikh’s death, a group of men attacked Kasturi Hospital on Tuesday night.
“The men had covered their faces and destroyed furniture before fleeing from the place. The staff then called the police. We have registered a case of rioting and unlawful assembly against unidentified person,” said Senior Inspector Amar Nimbalkar of Bhayander police.
