According to a statement issued by Chidambaram on Thursday, Divya Salaskar, 23, has been appointed as assistant sales tax commissioner in Mumbai.

The appointment was made by the state on compassionate grounds. “I promised her that I would take up the matter with the Maharashtra chief minister and request him to persuade the Maharashtra Public Service Commission to expedite the case,” Chidambaram said in a statement from New Delhi. He intervened in the matter after it was brought to his notice that the appointment was hanging fire for sometime.

“This morning, I was informed by the chief minister that Divya’s appointment has been approved,” Chidambaram said. Divya received a letter from the state government asking her to submit her medical reports on Thursday. After that, she will be offered the appointment letter.

“I thank Chidambaram, because it is after his intervention that the case was fast-tracked,” she added.
