A 30-year-old man was arrested on Saturday night on the charge of murdering his former roommate.

A special team of the Shivaji Nagar police station arrested Vinayak Kamble, 30, from a forest near the Maharashtra-Karnataka border on Saturday. He was taken to a local court, which remanded him in police custody till May 27.

According to the police, Kamble escaped to Latur, his native place, after the murder. “We chased him to Latur, where we went to the homes of all his relatives. Kamble kept changing his location. However, we managed to track him down,” said sub-inspector S Awte, of Shivaji Nagar police station.

The case first came to light when the deceased, Shahabuddin Ansari, 30, a resident of Sanjay Nagar slums and a tailor by profession, was found with his throat slit in a hutment at Baba Nagar slums, on May 17. After the police learned that Ansari was last seen with Kamble around 9pm on May 16, they started searching for Kamble, who was nowhere to be found.

They also found a pack of condoms at the spot.

Upon investigation, the police found that Kamble was a homosexual. Police sources said that Kamble had confessed to the murder. However, police are investigating if Kamble tried to have sex with the victim.
