After facing flak for the terrible condition of roads last monsoon, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to not just fill potholes, but also resurface 33 flyovers before the monsoon.
While 22 of these are managed by the BMC, the civic body will also repair the 11 flyovers managed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), which include Sion Junction, Hindmata Thakur Complex, Malad Junction , Santacruz, Navghar junction , Dindoshi junction, Kings Circle, Lalbaug, Barfiwala and Suman Nagar.
Last monsoon, several flyovers across the city developed massive craters, leading to severe traffic jams. Driving on flyovers such as the one outside Dadar station (managed by the BMC) and the Sion flyover (managed by the MMRDA) had became a nightmare. Following a meeting with the MMRDA officials on Thursday, the BMC has decided to take over 11 bridges for petty maintenance. “We will resurface bridges which were in bad condition last year. We have decided to take care of MMRDA’s bridges too,” said Aseem Gupta, additional municipal commissioner.
Most of these bridges have not been resurfaced in the past 7-8 years. With fresh roadwork, the flyovers should be more motorable than they were last year, he said. The civic body has invited tenders for the repair of these bridges and the proposal will be tabled before new standing committee this month. Sources said that the civic body might use a pothole-repair technology, Wonderpatch, for resurfacing the bridges.
