Four persons, including a woman and her minor son, were killed and 34 injured when a gas cylinder exploded in a bakery at Cheetah Camp, Trombay on Wednesday. Six of the injured are stated to be serious.
At around 1.45 pm, one of the eight cylinders stocked inside Uzair bakery on the Mirza Ghalib Road exploded. Soon, a blaze engulfed the ground-plus-one structure, which came down like a pack of cards.
“The noise was frightening. People started rushing towards the spot. Many of those who were near the bakery were injured,” said Mohamad Shamsuddin, who witnessed the incident.
The injured were rushed to Shatabdi and Sion hospitals. The dead were identified as Zayda Shaikh, 33, and her son Zahid, 12; Mallika Dodhiyar, 45 and Mohamad Afroz Shah, 25.
Locals said while the ground floor of the structure had a bakery, the first floor had a zari unit.
The Trombay police have detained Ekrar Mohamad Ansari, the manager of the bakery, for questioning and have registered a case under Section 304 (A) (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code against the bakery owner identified as Yasin Bhai.
Sanjay Khaire, senior inspector of Trombay police said, “We are awaiting a report from the Mumbai fire brigade, which would confirm the cause of incident. After getting the report, we will initiate further action.”
