Commuting on the Bandra Worli sea link is set to become smoother with the four-lane north carriageway scheduled for competition by February.
HCC, the contractors undertaking work on the project have installed the last segment of the sea link, signaling the completion of the RCC component of the project.
“We are hoping to complete work on the project by mid-February. A decision on when to open the north carriageway for public, will be taken by the government,” a senior MSRDC official said.
At present, only the four-lane south carriageway has been opened for public use.
These four lanes have been divided into two lanes each to allow southbound and northbound traffic. Absence of permanent dividers on the carriageway have led to a number of accidents in the recent months. But with the northbound carriageway opened for public use, traffic heading from the city to the suburbs will flow smoothly.
“The new carriageway will ensure that there are no more head on collisions on the Sea Link,” a MSRDC official said.
As per the original plan, the northbound carriageway would be connected with the southbound route through a cloverleaf interchange. The interchange would pass over the southbound carriageway, and land at the Worli-end close to the Thadani Junction. Construction of the cloverleaf interchange is expected to take more than two years. The MSRDC plans to make a temporary arrangement by constructing a connector on the sea link.

{{/usCountry}}As per the temporary arrangement, commuters traveling on the sea link from the Worli-end will use the old two-lane road.
After traveling a distance of 1.1 km on the south carriageway, the commuters can get on to the north carriageway through the new connector. This will allow commuters to use the entire four-lane carriageway for northbound travel.
