Sarita Kunchikokhe, 24, claims that her in-laws assaulted her on Sunday, because they were unhappy with her for failing to conceive even after six years of marriage. She alleged that they demanded her to get Rs 2 lakh from her parents.

The police have registered a case against Sarita’s mother-in-law Saraswati, father-in-law Narsanna, sister-in-law, Shanti, 16 and brother-in-law Vijay, 21.

Sarita’s mother, Shanta Saiyappa, 43, said: “When our daughter got married to Naresh six years ago, we had given them Rs 5 lakh and gold gold jewellery. However, Saraswati and Narsanna were not satisfied and started torturing my daughter and demanding Rs 2 lakh more.”

“On Sunday, Sarita and her in-laws had a verbal spat over a petty issue and her in-laws allegedly assaulted her,” said an officer from the Dharavi police station on condition of anonymity.

Sarita’s parents approached the Dharavi police and admitted her at Sion hospital, where she is being treated for injuries on her head, hands and legs.
